NATURAL AGRICULTURE AROUND THE WORLD
Germany
Bad Nauheim-Steinfurth
Shumei’s Steinfurth farm was the first pilot farm in Europe to implement Natural Agriculture. The farm was first established in 2004 under the guidance of Shumei Natural Agriculture farmer Mitsuo Saito. Steinfurth is a district of Bad Nauheim, which is known as one of the biggest rose-cultivation areas in Germany and it is located only 40 minutes drive from Frankfurt.
The Steinfurth farm now serves as a model Natural Agriculture farm. In recent years, Farmer Saito believes that the soil fertility has improved and the land has become more alive with the harmonious cooperation between the diversity of vegetables, fruit trees, herbs and flowers.
Carrots, radishes, potatoes, and several varieties of lettuce, spinach and cabbage are grown without the use of agro-chemicals or manure in the open field. The farm also has two greenhouses for paprika, zucchini and different types of heirloom tomatoes. In the spring, strawberries and different seasonal fruits are cultivated in the open field, and in the summer, flowers blossom constantly.
During the summer harvest season, people come from the surrounding towns and cities in the region to visit the Steinfurth farm. The farm provides a beautiful place for visitors to connect with nature and see how vegetables are grown. Shumei offers four to five tours of the model farm each summer and provides educational talks and materials on Natural Agriculture.
